About the Havanese Club of America, Inc.

We are the Havanese Club of America (HCA)—the national AKC Parent Club for the Havanese breed. Here on our website, you will find information about our club, our Havanese, our events, and activities, as well as an abundance of informational materials.

Club Profile

In 1979, a small group of dedicated Havanese fanciers assembled to form a national breed club for the Havanese, the Havanese Club of America. After several years of increasing membership and establishing a comprehensive breed registry, the club began pursuing AKC recognition. Initially, the Havanese competed in the Rare Breed category, and finally, in 1996 the Havanese became a member of the Toy Group with full recognition by AKC.

The HCA Statement of Purpose

The purpose of the Havanese Club of America is to honor and preserve the purebred Havanese as defined in the approved HCA, AKC breed standard.

We do this by:

  • Encouraging and promoting quality in the breeding of purebred Havanese and doing all possible to bring their natural qualities to perfection
  • Encouraging the organization of independent local Havanese Specialty Clubs in those localities where there are sufficient fanciers of the breed to meet the requirements of the American Kennel Club
  • Urging members and breeders to accept the standard of the breed approved by the AKC as the only standard of excellence by which Havanese shall be judged
  • Doing all in its power to protect and advance the interests of the breed and to encourage sportsmanlike competition at dog shows, companion trials, and agility events
  • Conducting sanctioned matches, specialty shows, obedience trials, and agility trials under the rules of the AKC

We Intentionally Support Mindful Stewardship

Employing broad-based education and respectful reinforcement, the HCA advocates for adherence to honoring the AKC-approved standard of the breed. Members agree to the adherence to the HCA Code of Ethics.

We Embrace Respectful Competition

Our members do all in our power to seek excellence in ourselves and our dogs, when we safeguard and advance the interests of our breed, inspiring sportsmanlike behavior at all times.
