MBIS MBISS GCHP2 Oeste’s in the Name of Love, ROM, the top-winning Havanese show dog of all time!

BONO – also known as GCHP2 Oeste’s in the Name of Love ROM – with his beguiling expression, Havanese type, and outstanding conformation and movement – set new standards for Havanese achievements in the show ring. In so doing, he opened the door for other Havanese to win Best in Show and Group One awards with greater frequency than they had in the past. His appearances on televised dog shows led “BONO the Havanese” to become a household name among dog lovers. What is the life story of this celebrity Havanese?

BONO was one of six puppies in a litter born on July 23, 2016, with a litter theme of the Rock Stars. He was named after the U2 lead singer by the name of Bono. His registered name, “Oeste’s in the Name of Love,” comes from the U2 hit song, “Pride: In the Name of Love.” Sire is CH. OESTE’S TOP GUN ROM (“CRUZ”), and his dam is the All-Breed Best in Show winner GCHB OESTE’S STEALING THE STARLIGHT ROM (“LUCIA”).

The breeders of BONO’s litter, HCA members Julie Vogel (Oeste Havanese), Rafe Schindler and Mary King, as well as Taffe McFadden, own and bred CRUZ and LUCIA. BONO is co-owned by his co-breeders and their friends, Patrina and Bruce Odette.

In 2017, BONO finished his championship quickly, but not without some entertaining moments. Once while being shown as a class dog, he spotted his “mother,” Taffe McFadden, showing a dog in another ring. BONO’s antics to get Taffe to turn around and acknowledge him were notable (“Hey mom, look at me!”). Fortunately, he won despite his antics. After BONO finished his AKC conformation championship, he was shown once more in 2017 at the Havanese Club of America National Specialty, where he was awarded Best in Sweepstakes.

BONO’S “specials” career began in 2018. He was awarded his first Toy Group One in January 2018, and his first All-Breed Best in Show in March 2018. His June 2018 award of Best in Show at one of the prestigious Woofstock shows in Vallejo, California was a special thrill. His human family had for many years looked at the amazing Woofstock ribbons and trophies, never expecting one of their dogs to win a top prize. BONO was also awarded Best of Breed at the Havanese Club of America National Specialty and associated Regional show in 2018. He finished the year with nine All-Breed Best in Show awards, and as the #1 Havanese and #4 Toy Dog in the United States.

Continuing success, beginning in January, BONO was awarded multiple All-Breed Bests in Show in that month. So, when co-breeder/owner Mary King checked out the All-Breed rankings for January 2019, she was a bit disappointed to glance down the list of 100 dogs and not see BONO’s name. Surely with BONO’s January wins his name would at least show up. Finally, Mary glanced to the top of the rankings and saw BONO’s name listed first, as top-ranked dog for all breeds in the country. Incredulous, Mary immediately texted the exciting news to Taffe McFadden. After verifying the ranking, Taffe texted back, “Just so you know, I am not giving up the #1 position all year.” And so, the die was cast.

The major shows in New York City in February 2019 solidified BONO’s position as a top national contender. BONO was awarded Best in Specialty at the Greater New York Havanese Club Specialty, and Best in Show at the prestigious Progressive Dog Club Toy Show. At the Westminster Kennel Club Show at Madison Square Garden, BONO continued his winning streak, and was awarded Best of Breed, then Toy Group One. For the Best in Show class the following evening, co-breeder/owner Mary King sat in good seats at the Garden thanks to friends who had the foresight to procure them. The rest of BONO’s family watched on TV from their homes. What a thrill it was when legendary Judge Mr. Peter Green awarded BONO Reserve Best in Show, as runner up to a lovely wire fox terrier who had been campaigned internationally for several years.

For the remainder of 2019, BONO and Taffe McFadden, together with either Tomoko Saeki or Ethan Coye as Taffe’s assistant, traveled the United States to show BONO almost every weekend. They were awarded Bests in Show by many different judges and at many prestigious shows. BONO enjoyed performing for the crowds and being pampered in and out of the show ring. BONO and Taffe appeared on network TV and AKC-TV broadcasts numerous times. To their delight, Taffe allowed BONO to be photographed with adoring fans across the country.

The year culminated in Orlando, Florida, with BONO in an extraordinary lead as #1 Dog All Breeds, #1 Toy Dog and #1 Havanese All Systems, and winning Best in Show under two great judges at this year-end finale: Judge Mrs. Pat Trotter and Judge Mr. Elliott Weiss.

In February 2020, BONO’s family celebrated BONO’s epic 2019 year at a dinner and awards ceremony at Gotham Hall in Manhattan, hosted by Dog News Magazine and Purina Pro Plan. BONO was acknowledged as the Purina Pro Plan “Show Dog of the Year” and “Toy Dog of the Year.” The teams of the top-ranked dogs in the six other AKC groups also attended, along with numerous dog world personalities. BONO was also awarded his second consecutive Group One at the 2020 Westminster Kennel Club Show.

The finale event for BONO in New York in 2020 was the presentation of a life-sized sculpture of BONO by artist Fan Yu to the AKC Museum of the Dog. The sculpture was commissioned and donated by Joan Ambrose, a great patron of Havanese. The presentation was attended by BONO, along with his litter sister FIONA (who, along with her human parents, is a resident of Manhattan); the artist Fan Yu and his wife Amy; Joan Ambrose; AKC Museum Director Alan Fausal; AKC TV broadcaster Bill Ellis; many of BONO’s human family, including Taffe and Bill McFadden, and their daughter Taylor, Tomoko Saeki, Ethan Coye, and Mary King; Susan Sprung, Donna Rotoloni, Joann Bell and other show dog world personalities and friends of Havanese.

BONO was shown a few more times in 2020, but in March, dog shows came to a halt due to the rapid spread of Covid-19. BONO spent his down time siring occasional litters of puppies. BONO’s show career resumed on a selective basis in 2021, as his team had a show-career goal of BONO winning 100 Best in Show awards. He was awarded his 100th All-Breed Best in Show at the Sacramento Kennel Club Show in July 2021 by Judge Mr. Eugene Blake. Having reached this milestone of 100 All-Breed Best in Show awards, BONO retired from the show ring to be a full-time, spoiled rotten, companion dog to his family.

In addition to his stellar show career, in a limited number of breedings, BONO has sired Best in Show and Reserve Best in Show winners in the United States and Canada and has earned his Register of Merit (ROM) as a sire of champions.

At home, BONO is charming, beguiling and endearing. To see him in a puppy clip is to clearly see the balance, conformation, movement, and breed type that propelled him to the top. He is the epitome of a perfect Havanese. He is much loved by his entire human family.

His lifetime show career from AKC records is:

  • 253 Group 1 Awards
  • 9 Toy Dog Best in Specialty Show Awards
  • 13 Best in Havanese Specialty Show Awards
